Who is The Dark Moon Ensemble?

The Dark Moon Ensemble are a duo with myself Nigel Sanders on Pianos, Guitar and percussion; and Emma Francis on Clarinets and Percussion.

What made you go into music and how long have you been in the industry?

I have been a freelance composer and performer for 20 years whilst Emma has been performing for 4 years.

Tell us about your latest released project. What's the background and inspiration behind it?

Our first single was released back in February 2022 and comprised of ambient piano and clarinet. It was a three-sectioned piece with strong noir jazz overtones. It has met with much praise and is available from most digital stores. The inspiration came from dark jazz mixed with Beethoven.

Who did you work with on your latest release?

This was self-produced as I have a studio for such things. We are now looking to work with Italian producer Giovanni Amighetti.

What are the challenges you have faced so far as an artist?

Getting our music in front of as many relevant people as possible on a limited budget.

What do you think of the music industry in 2022 and beyond?

The music industry continues to mediate what we listen to via streaming and more independence and support are needed to develop new artists for the future. However, I think that there is a bright future as long as we keep supporting music in the UK and beyond at all levels.

How has the current pandemic affected you as an artist and as a person?

Yes. We as a duo have grown out of the pandemic so the only way is up for us.

Who are your favorite artists and how have they influenced your music and style?

My favorite artists are wide and varied but for this project probably Bill Evans to Rachmaninov to Pink Floyd to Bohren and der Club of Gore.

Are you currently working on any new music at the moment?

Yes, we are going to Italy to perform at a festival followed by two local gigs straight after. We are then going to start work on our next EP with Giovanni Amighetti.

How do you define success as an artist?

Mmmm. There is only one form of success as an artist and that is purely internal. The rest of it is fine and rewarding but you have to be at peace with yourself and passionate about what you do.

Outside making music what else do you enjoy doing most?

Reading and writing books about music.

What was the first album you bought?

Elton John - Rock of The Westies.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

Royksopp - Here She Comes Again.

What other genre of music do you enjoy listening to and will be happy to explore as an artist?

World Music, Blues, and many electronic kinds of music.

Our audience wanted to know. Do you have any tattoos?

Not yet, but I plan to have one very soon.
